Auto-Placebo?!

Today, I had a wonderful day, mainly because of one reason: the entire day I have been thinking that it was Wednesday, I literally forgot every memory of Monday. A few hours ago, I found out that it was Thursday, and now I'm freaking happy about skipping an entire day of boringness and getting Friday instead, cos', ya know, you gotta get down on Friday!! (ugh...my brain is infested with Rebecca Black Dx)
So, after I got this out of my System, has something like this ever happened to you? Like, your brain rewarding you by making you forget something like a sandwich and then making you find it again, while you think "Yay, free Sandwich!"?
Feels great :D

The End of the Civilised World

I like to think about this topic. Sure, it has been subject to many movies, for example The Omega Man, I am Hero or the Zombie series. It's just awesome to think about having the entire world for yourself. Lately, i've met more and more people thinking of the end of the World (2012, wooooooo!!), but how will the End come?
Maybe it will be World War 3, ending humanity's existence with nuclear weapons. (I always have to think of a quote from Einstein when thinking about this: "I don't know what kind of weapons will be used in WW3, but in WW4 it will be sticks and stones.")
Maybe something from Space will hit us, like a Comet or an Asteroid, or maybe a Giant chunk of frozen Hydrogen will fly into the sun, resulting in a huge Explosion.
But I especially like the thought of being the only one left on Earth, like if you're the only one immune to a deadly Virus. Imagine all the stuff you could do! Go drive a Ferrari, eat at fancy restaurants, burn money, burn something else, do whatever you like.
But you would also have to learn the basics again. You would have to learn hunting, crafting, building or, in short, surviving.

Or, you could just go play Minecraft :)

Sacrifice Human Life for the greater Good?

25 Years ago, reactor number 4 at Chernobyl Power Plant exploded, leaving the world in terror. The burning reactor emitted a radioactive cloud, threatening to contaminate all of Europe. This was when the Soviet Union decided to send approximately 800,000 men to the site of the event, the so called Liquidators. They were ordered to remove contaminated objects, such as parts of the actual reactor or contaminated animals, they had to extinguish the fire and they were also the ones who erected the concrete sarcophagus around the reactor. It is clear that without the liquidators, Europe would have suffered a much worse fate from the Chernobyl catastrophy. Also, it is estimated that about 50,000 of them have died in consequence due to their exposure to radioactivity, many more suffer because of other diseases that are a direct effect of radioactivity.

Today, in Fukushima, we face a new difficulty: Japan is not a totalitarian state. They can't force their soldiers to go sacrifice themselves. At the moment, there are 50 workers at Fukushima trying to prevent the maximum credible accident, but as we saw from Chernobyl, it takes many more than just 50. Alone, they can't save Fukushima, and if they do, it'll be pure luck.
So what should Japan do now?
What should any liberal democracy do in case of a nuclear meltdown?

Mary Jane - what did she do?

Why is weed illegal? Seriously, why?
And I don't just ask this because i like to light a bud, it is because I really want to know why our governments still insist on giving plant-owners jail time. I mean, how ridiculous is the fact, that some people have to sit years in Jail for the possession of a plant, while a child molester gets a shorter sentence? And its not even like its a dangerous drug, until now, there hasn't been a single reported death due to a THC-Overdose.
Seriously, this f*ckin grinds my gears.
Watch out Kids, this is dangerous!!!
In my Opinion even Alcohol is more dangerous than weed.
Like, have you ever been threatened by a group of high teenagers? What, will they, like, slowly beat you up and then start spacing out while they're at it?
Or have you heard of Hobo's getting AIDS because they shared their infected THC-Needles?
Or maybe Subway will possess World Domination because everyone suddenly starts eating there.

Actually, in Holland, where Marijuana is decriminalised and you can actually buy it in so-called Coffee-Shops, the teenagers are less tempted to smoke than, for example, in Germany.
This just doesn't make any Sense to me. It's just a frickin' PLANT!

Behind the Moon

See this Picture? This is the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field, a picture taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. What you can see in the Picture are Galaxies, approximately from a time shortly after the Big Bang, 13 billion years ago. This is the deepest look humanity has ever taken into the Universe. The size of this Picture from our perspective is equal to roughly one thirteen-millionth of the total area of the sky. Each of these Galacies contain billions of stars by themselves again.

The sheer immensity of this gives me the chills.

Euthanasia - Yes or No?

...this is a difficult topic. So...I'll just start with how i got confronted with this in the first place...
About half a year ago I made an internship in an Intensive Care Home for old people with Alzheimer's and all other kinds of (mostly lethal) diseases. I never had any experience with any people older than 60 years (My Grandparents died quite young), so I was completely new to the entire topic. Needless to say, I was completely terrified. 20 old people, most of them uncapable of doing anything more than moaning. I felt helpless, I tried everything i could, with no results. It may sound harsh, but that was when i first started thinking about Euthanasia. Strangely, before my internship I was totally pro-life. I never thought that it could be possible that being dead is better than living. After this, to be honest, I don't think its a bad idea to end someones life if it only consists of suffering and disorientation.
 Should we pull the Plug?
But, as always, there are problems with Euthanasia, first off, I want to mention the Euthanasia-Campaign in the Third Reich, systematically killing off everyone seen as a 'Racial Hazard' or 'Race Desecrator of Aryans' in the Nazi-Ideology. That might be what People automatically think of when they hear of Euthanasia.
Also, there has been a Complex of Problems with Coma-Patients. What, if they are still awake inside and listen to their relatives wanting to end their lives? Creepy thoughts.
After all, I think we should find a reasonable balance. I'm not generally against keeping People alive for years, but if there is hardly to none brain-activity we should pull the plug. People just have to learn that life is finite. No one lives for ever. We just finally have to accept this and learn to part from our beloved ones if there is no other way.

How does the thought of a Creator fit into our highly-technologised society?

After growing up in a Protestant home but having never believed in a God as he is characterized in the Bible, I keep catching myself doubting whether we need a "God" in a modern society. Surely, a thousand years ago, people needed Religion, for it provided social legislation and moral values. Of Course, nowadays we need those things too, but i dont think that raging atheists will start burning people as soon as we stop going to church. We have Statute Books and Constitutions to make sure that people behave the right way today. But, without religion, some questions are left, such as: Who or what created us? Is there life after death? Is there an Intention in our existance?

Personally, I'm not sure about this matter. I do not know whether there is a Creator or not. In the Case that there is one, I doubt that we could ever understand it, or that "it" would be the same God we know from the Bible; it propably doesn't even care about us. If there is no Creator, we are a bunch of unimportant mammals floating on a rock through space, unlikely to ever do or find something really crucial.
On the subject of Life after Death, there are a lot of reports of people who have nearly died and all had Visions of heaven-like Creatures and total happiness. Again, I do not know whether they really were on the step to a new form of existance, or if it just was a backlash by the Brain, trying to ease itself from the total certainty of Death.
So... do we have a Purpose in this world?

I think we do. And I also think that it has nothing to do with our Creator or where we come from. And that is the message i want to get across: Before we start blowing our own Horn about how awesome we are or start wondering about unimportant stuff like what happens after death, maybe we should think about what happens before that; we should finally change something about us. There is no difference between us and the people 2000 years ago: We still hate each other because of our skin's colour, People still kill each other, steal, rape and wage war.
So if you need a rolemodel like a "loving, almighty God that always watches you" to do that, then go and pray, but don't try to shove it down other People's throats.
Everyone should have his own choice whether he wants to believe, and in what, or not.

War in Lybia - Freedom for Lybia or Crusade for Oil?

It's all over the News at the moment - the United Nations attack Lybian Troops in an attempt to protect revolutionists from their own Army. It seems like a noble deed to protect the military inferior-equipped revolutionists from al Gaddafi's Fighter Jets - but in my opinion this sounds a lot like another military operation that had its 8th anniversary two days ago: Operation Iraqi Freedom. Back then, the USA attacked Iraq in order to dispossess Saddam Hussein who was supposed to be in possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction, which turned out to be false. Anyways, i fear that Lybia might turn into a new Iraq, even now some say that the UN only erected the no-fly zone to take control over Lybia and its Oil resources. Also, Lybia is way richer and has better military equipment than Iraq back then. Ironic is, that Lybia bought High-Tech German warfare equipment, which can get more than dangerous even to American equipment.

A jet shot down over Bengasi
But, still, in my opinion it is right to fight Muammar al Gaddafi! What would have happened if nobody stopped Hitler from waging war on his own and other peoples of europe?
Ordering your military to kill your own People is wrong. A good Leader has to know when he has to go. And if he doesn't go, we will force him to.

Is Nuclear Energy dangerous?

Recently, due to the catastrophic events in Fukushima, Japan, I came to think whether nuclear energy is safe enough for us to take advantage of it. As seen in Chernobyl, the worst-case scenario of a meltdown can destroy the entire environment near a power-plant, contaminating it for years to come. But, sadly, noone learned anything, and now even countries like India and China with high corruption-rates and low security-standards build nuclear power plants.

Which leads to other Questions: Are there alternatives? Is green Energy worth the effort?
Can a highly industrialised Nation relinquish Nuclear Energy and adapt itself to a more ecologic Power-Source?
In my Opinion, Yes. Even if Officials say that their Power Plants are 99.99% safe, in my Opinion we shouldn't wait for Doomsday and start thinking for ourselves. Because i do not want to be the one to explain to his child, that it has a missing pancreas because it "was good for the economy".
